Description
Along with Alkalinity and Magnesium, Calcium is one of the three foundational elements of any reef tank. Calcium is consumed as corals build their stony skeletons and, as such, must be replaced through either water changes, dosing, or a combination of both. However, in order for a hobbyist to know how much to dose the levels of calcium in the aquarium must be carefully monitored.
Aquaforest Calcium Test Pro kit is a simple and accurate way to measure the Calcium levels in a home reef tank. It is suggested that Calcium levels be checked weekly in established aquariums and more often in newer tanks. Since Aquaforest test kits contain enough reagents for roughly 55-60 tests, a single test kit can last for up to a year.
The Aquaforest Calcium Test kits use the common titration method whereby reagents are added slowly until a noticeable colour change occurs. The amount of reagent necessary to achieve the colour change indicates the level of Calcium in the water. Generally, hobbyists should aim for roughly 400-450 ppm of Calcium in a mixed reef tank. Calcium and Alkalinity levels are often inversely related, so Calcium levels that are too high or too low will make it difficult to maintain appropriate Alkalinity levels as well.
Regular testing is a key pillar of reef keeping success, and the Aquaforest Calcium Test kit is a valuable tool for all reefers. They are accurate, easy to use and inexpensive, especially compared to the cost of replacing corals lost due to incorrect water parameters. Reefers who test their water regularly are far more likely to experience success in their reef tanks, and the Aquaforest Calcium kit can help make that dream a reefing reality.
