Description
Salifert is a Dutch company that specializes in both fresh and saltwater test kits. They are one of the oldest manufacturers of salt water test kits and have been trusted by hobbyists for years. When cycling a new reef tank, or any aquarium for that matter, it is important for hobbyists to be aware of the levels of three key compounds: Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
In the second stage of the nitrogen cycle, bacteria begin to consume the toxic ammonia and a byproduct of this is nitrite. A quality nitrite test kit, such as the Salifert Nitrite Test Kit, will allow reefers to confidently know what stage of the nitrogen cycle their tank is in. Since nitrite is harmful to all reef inhabitants it is important to ensure that levels have risen and then fallen to zero before considering adding livestock.
The Salifert Nitrite Test Kit includes everything necessary to easily and accurately test the levels of nitrite in a home aquarium. It includes a 2 mL syringe for measuring the tank water to be tested, enough reagent for 60 tests, and a testing container with a tight fitting lid. Also included is an easy to read colour chart for interpreting the results and easy to follow instructions.
Once a tank has been successfully cycled it is unlikely that nitrites will need to be tested on a regular basis but it is always a good idea to have test kits on hand, just in case. A set of high quality test kits, such as those offered by Salifert, are one of the best investments a new hobbyist can make. Being aware of changes in water parameters can allow reefers to spot problems before they become a crisis and can go a long way in helping to achieve reefing success.
